Get Count of Child Custom Records

Scenario:
A parent-child relationship has been established by creating a child custom record. On the parent record, when nlapiGetLineItemCount is executed to retrieve the child record count, result is either -1 or undefined.

Resolution:
On the child custom record, enable Allow Child Editing. Also, on the custom fields, enable Show in List.
