When a new customer is registered as company, NetSuite also creates the contact for that customer. Shopper is able to fill in only the regular fields. Most of contact fields are not displayed in the registration. Since the custom contact form with mandatory fields that are not filled, the validation of created contact fails and thus the customer registration fails.
To avoid the "An error occurred during registration. Please try again." message, make sure that Custom Contact form does not have fields which are mandatory.
To check the custom Contact form:
1. Navigate to Set up > Customization > Entry Forms
2. Fields tab
3. Make sure that fields are not set to mandatory (Except for defaulted checked or greyed out checkboxes)
5. Save
