A Check Digit is the last number in a bar code. It is computed automatically based on the first 11 digits. Check Digit is important to verify if the bar code is valid. In NetSuite if the check digit is incorrect, the barcode does not print. Specialists normally validate the check digit by performing complex equation on the first 11 digits of a UPC bar code. In NetSuite, verification can be faster and easier by just entering the first 11 digit of the barcode before printing it.
Below are steps to illustrate how to validate a check digit in an item record.
1. Edit an inventory item record
2. Enter "123456789012" in the UPC Code field
3. Save
4. Click Print Label (Notice that the barcode label successfully prints)
5. Now, edit the item record again and enter a barcode with an invalid check digit like "123456789010"
6. Save
7. Click Print Label (Notice that the barcode label does not print)
To test if the bar code check digit is valid
8. Edit the inventory item record used in step#1
9. Enter the barcode number without the check digit in the UPC Code field, like so: 12345678901
10. Save
11. Click Print Label.
Notice that when NetSuite prints the barcode label it automatically validates check digit but supplying it with the correct one.
