Void Marks on Metavante Printed Checks

Payees of Metavante checks sometimes report existence of " Void Marks " on the face of the check. Due to the "void Marks", banks dishonor the checks and mark the same with "Refer to Maker".

Be it noted that, Metavante does not send checks with void marks. The void marks are exposed on the duplicate copy of the check. Metavante checks expose the void marks when copied either physically or electronically for security purposes. This can be through electronic transmittal, photocopy, fax or scan. Only copies other than the original bears the void marks.

That being the case, customers must coordinate with the bank and ask if the copy of the check they are holding is the original. If not, the bank should coordinate with their department or the branch of origin where the original physical check was presented or deposited. This is because only original checks are valid for deposit. If it was invalid from the start, the tellers should have not accepted it. Ask for a scanned copy of the checks with void marks and it will be verified that there is a receipt stamp at the back of the check confirming that the original physical check has been accepted by the teller upon deposit. Customer should also explain to the bank that the void marks appeared because the bank is checking the recopied check and not the physical check.
